Records of the Civil Registratration Service have now been converted to electronic format. They have either been directly scanned or the data therein has been typed into the service’s new electronic database. They are preserved using strict safeguards.

Replacement copies of Eire / Republic of Ireland Birth Certificates are printed on special security paper and incorporate several security features. It is always an offence to alter a certificate or attempt to use an altered certificate.

If it is felt that the transcribed information is faulty it should be reported back to the Issuing Office where the Registrars still have access to the original records. Transcription errors can unintentionally occur especially where the original entry is unclear.

Prior to 1st October 1997 birth registrations did not include the following information:-

A Surname for the child
Any Former Surname of the Father
The Address and Occupation of the Mother

A Birth Certificate is an historical record, therefore these details will appear blank on replacement copies of Eire / Republic of Ireland Birth Certificates where the birth registration occurred prior to 1st October 1997. This is not an error. To include them would be an alteration of the original registration details by an unauthorised person and illegal.

This generally only applies to transcibed copies. Scanned copies retain their original classification boxes/fields.
